Another Aurora Experience

I’ve always wanted to photograph the Norhtern lights reflected in water and this Autumn I got my chance. After a hectic summer at our Norwegian fishing lodge, I headed North with the missus to the Norwegian polar circle. Auroral activity was patchy but after a day spent scouting we found a fantastic north-facing viewpoint in the Ranafjord near Mo i Rana.

The night was still, the sky clear and the fjord a perfect mirror. All we needed was for the lights to play ball. Sitting in the dark, perched on a rock high above the fjord we were enthralled by the sound of dolphins coming up for air. From somehwhere out in the blackness the sound of a sounding mammal blowing spent air would drift up through the crackling atmosphere setting our nerves on edge. A Fox crept by, sillhoutted against the twilight sky.Sometime around eleven the sky over the mountains began to glow feignt green and, as the colour gathered intensity my finger hovered over the remote release.

And then there she was! Lights crept across the sky like the graphic equaliser on an an eighties CD player until it formed a giant nocturnal rainbow. I don’t think I will ever tire of seeing and photographing the aurora it’s simply awesome!Â
