Aurora – Chasing the Light

Many of you who visit this site regularly will know that photographing the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis have become a real passion. Over the past two winters I have made numerous attempts to get some realy nice aurora shots, spending many, many nights in the mountains of Norway to get that magic shot.

Well, I think that at long last I have managed it. You can view a better image of this shot in the Norway gallery but here’s a quick preview!

Getting the shot was a real bonus. I went to my favourite spot overlooking Singsaas near our Norwegian farm on a freezing cold Febrary night. The aurora forecast was good but the weather forecast was not (getting clear skies and calm conditions is a must for aurora photography) but surprise, surprise the night was simply beautiful – not a cloud in the sky, no visible moon and barely a breath of wind. Perfect!

During the night the temperature dropped to minus twenty five. In all, I spent six hours taking shots as the aurora came and went. Eventually I had to pack in when the camera completely froze up!

Yet, by the end of my vigil, at one in the morning I knew that I had some good shots. This picture is really special because it shows all of the classic aurora colours including green (the usual visible colour), red, blue, yellow and purple.

Awesome!Â
