Matt Hayes Perch Pattern Pike Fly

Thread: Danville Flat Waxed Nylon

Hook: Sakuma 3/0

Body: Steve Farrar Slf blend synthetic in white followed by olive with red slinky fibre to create the throat and gills. Trim body to shape after tying and create a baitfish shape when seem form the side, above and below. The final touch is to mark the back with a dark olive pantone pen and add the vertical bars with the same.

Eyes: Doll Eyes

Head: Epoxy

The synthetic fibres are pre-blended by Farrar and contain just the right amount of flash. The fibres are tied in bunches – top folowed by a bunch on each side until you reach the hook. The top bunch is always the full wing length but the side bunches get progressively shorter as you approach the hook eye. The difficult part is with the scissors – don’t trim too much at a time and keep combing the fly between snips until you get that critical baitfish profile. The epoxy head protects the eyes from the pike’s teeth and prevents them from being ripped off while at the same time causing the fly to dive and climb when retrieved.
